Using the right type of resource curve

Using the right type of resource curve in project planning softwares can be bit confusing as there are so many options besides the option of being able to customise for your use. Alternatively, manually filling values using bucket planning can be bit challenging doing it for so many resources and so many activities. One of the best methods I have come across is to look at the available float for the project and the activity, if it is too tight during the planning phase, linear option might be best fit and if it is too slack, backload it. But this skill really comes through practical experience.
